Went with my friend Katie to see Company of Thieves at the Newport - she’s an enormous fan. We rushed the stage like a couple of high school kids right before the went on; sorry not sorry about that.

Anyway, having only heard the singles, I was immediately won over. Her absolutely astounding voice really lent itself to the acoustic set. Also, when she started crying after the applause during the encore… I must admit. it was very cute. I got the impression CD 102.5 did a lot to promote the band early on - which warms my heart.

All around good show. Thanks for the ticket, Katie. :)

It starts with the realization of an impending worsening. Then the guitar comes in verifying something indeed has happened - and it’s not looking good, almost comically so. As if a third person were to come into focus and relieve the viewer of this tragic first hand experience. Fully aware that the narrator has an adept ability to shine a positive light on any situation, you consciously fall into his spell.

The vocals come in and disrupt this light-hearted view of the scene. Something’s happened. Two people were involved. Only one walks away. The survivor goes on to describe how they came to know each other; sincerely. What started as love, turned stale - both completely aware. This evolved into facing the acceptance of what’s become. My emotions begin to rise and fall as if gliding along a sine curve. The highs are a feeling of realized awareness with the goal of understanding. The lows start with despair and quickly devolve into jealousy, and finally, anger.

After countless rounds of riding up and down, understanding is achieved; the problem has revealed itself. Once defined, tone shifts, giving birth to something uplifting. As if now that information is available, it’s not only possible, but there is already a known solution - so understood that it could be recited from memory.

Quickly it is made apparent that victory isn’t enough. Instinctively, every detail and justification is spilled - a reaction so primal that it occurs despite cognitive awareness that the offender possesses nothing resembling that of intent.

Finally, exhausted, the mind is at ease.

For me, 2011 was the year of the podcast. I spent nearly all my time set aside for audio entertainment listening to either How Stuff Works’ “Stuff You Should Know” or NPR’s “Radiolab”. While I loved every second of the enormous catalog from both shows, I did miss out on a ton of awesome music from 2011.

So, since the majority of 2012 was spent playing catch up, I felt the need to compile another silly list. Here goes:

Today I was lucky enough to sit in w/ Ben Shinabery of the Dick and Jane Project on WOSU’s All Sides w/ Ann Fisher for Tech Tuesday!

This past January Neo gave The Dick and Jane Project a $100,000 grant for the development of Dick and Jane Labs, an application the facilitates the collaboration between middle school students and professional musicians to create radio ready songs!

So I wanted to do a bit of textual analysis on the results of a redis query. Naturally I thought I could pass a couple commands to redis-cli and redirect the results to a file. Well, as it turns out, redis-cli only takes one command. I needed at least two commands in order to get the relevant results. So, how can I get that file?

A coworker of mine turned me on to an often overlooked unix command typescript. Here’s how you use it:

$: script
... do whatever you need to ...
[ctrl-D]

The text results of whatever you did in between typing “script” and pressing ctl-D, should have been written to a file called “typescript” in your current directory.

Don’t you love it when there’s a command that does exactly what you want. Thanks to Mike for telling me about it!
